Question by Shnake: What clothes should I wear in NY for the winter?
Hello! I'm going to live in New York for a month for school. It will be in January. However, I'm from the south where it hardly ever gets below freezing. Needless to say, I don't have "winter clothes." What should I wear for the cold weather? Are there special shoes that I need to wear to protect my feet from getting wet from the snow? Do I need long underwear? Should I buy a wool coat? Scarf? Gloves? Anything else?
Sorry if these questions sound stupid but I've never lived up north and sub-zero temperatures are completely foreign to me. Thanks so much!

Shnake, if you will be in the city, you'll find that sidewalks and streets tend to be fairly clear except right after snowfall. For a month, I would not invest in snow boots. (If you own hiking boots or other flat-heeled boots, bring them. Heels and snow don't mix.) I've been through winters in nothing but athletic shoes, although my feet did get chilly and wet sometimes. If that's all you have, bring two pairs, so one can be drying.
You will want a scarf, gloves or mittens, and either a coat with a hood or a hat. If you get a good wool coat and wear it over your 'down south' winter clothing, you'll probably be okay if your outfit includes a sweater over another shirt or top and either pants or a skirt/dress worn over a slip. (The extra layer really helps.) If you buy a down coat, you'd be okay in less--but have no occasion to wear it once you're back home.
You won't need long underwear or thermals. You'll learn quickly that layers are where it's at. Bring tights, thin long-sleeved shirts, and other layers that you can mix and match and you'll be just fine.
It's an exciting place to be!
