What is the best way to wash Cashmere?

Question by MrsADM: What is the best way to wash Cashmere?
I've never owned a cashmere sweater before (or a cashmere anything, if you can believe that). I received 2 of them as gifts over the holidays, and I LOVE them! I know that they are hand wash only, but what are your tips and/or secrets to cashmere care?

Thanks!

Do not wash your sweater. Dry clean it. Why take the chance of ruining it when you can just pay a couple bucks to have it professionally cleaned?

The Best Way to Wash Wool Clothing

Sunday mornings are the most difficult time of the week for a busy household that contains three kids and their menagerie. Two large canines, a fur ball coughing cat, and Spots the pet Lorikeet are difficult to wrangle so that they don't muss up the carefully prepared triumvirate of children who must go before God, and, more importantly, the eyes of prying neighbors when the family enters the holy environs of First Baptist. The middle one is a five year old girl who thinks that kitty must always shed in her lap, and the two boys are always looking for a mud hole to christen their brand new Sunday best. The pungent slobber of a friendly dog is not the best way to wash wool clothing. After the herd, the children not the animals, is strapped into the car and the delicate fabric wash advertisement for the actual best way to wash wool clothing is carefully clipped from the newspaper, everybody heads to worship in the family sedan.

At home again after an inspired message, the oldest one spills pot roast drippings in his lap. The kid is rolled out of his pants quickly, and given a lecture about always forgetting to change directly after church. The best way to wash wool clothing is not to douse said cloth with brown gravy from an overdone piece of meat either. The delicate fabric wash company may have the solution, as they say, but since that particular answer to this present crisis is on the way, and not in attendance, the wife must do her best with generic laundry detergent. Tempers always seem to wear thin on Sunday just when they should be the calmest.

The delicate fabric wash company seems to care about the situation to the extent that our worries will be concluded when the new fabric cleaner arrives. This pair of pants may be ruined because stale, cheap detergent is also not the best way to wash wool clothing. It is a shame that you find all the best ways NOT to do something before you find the best way to do it; trial and error can be hard on a small household budget. Why didn't the delicate fabric wash solution reach us before another pair of Sunday trousers had to be purchased? I guess someone has to be the fall guy, but why am I (the poor, to be pitied husband) to blame for the whole mess all of a sudden?

Is There a Best Way to Wash Wool Clothing?

Dry clean only, that is what the manufacturer’s instruction on most wool clothing reads, and these labels are there for good reason. Often, when washed in water, wool clothing will shrink. This can happen even when the garment is washed by hand. To know the likelihood of your garment being damaged you must consider how the fabric is made.

Because of the way wool sweaters are made they will most commonly shrink. Yarn which is twisted to be bulky and fuzzy will shrink more often than woven yarn which is more compact. Wool suits are often treated during production, this can prevent shrinkage however you must still be careful when washing. The liner in a wool suit is sewn in a manner that may make washing difficult. Even if you are successful in washing without shrinkage the liner may become too wrinkled to wear. Ironing the lining is typically not an option and leaving a crease in wool suit pants is nearly impossible.

If you would like to try washing wool check the label for fibers first. If the garment contains less than 50% real wool you should be okay. If there is more than that you should reconsider. Any wool clothing should be washed in cold water even lower percentage garments are more likely to lose their shape if you use hot water. A washing machine is not advisable for washing wool it should be done by hand. If you insist on using a machine be positive that you have a setting for wool cycle on the machine you are using. Always use a detergent made specifically for wool. Stronger detergents will damage your garments.

If you would like to wash wool by hand try this: Fill a sink with cool/ cold water. Add detergent and mix well. Push clothing into the water do not attempt to work the fabric. Repeat using clean water to rinse. Gently squeeze water out of garment. Do not ring. Fold in towel and press to remove water. Lie flat on a dry towel to dry. Do not place in sunlight this may fade or shrink material.

Now you know the best way to wash wool clothing. To be sure you do not ruin your clothing follow all of the above instructions. If you pay close attention to your task you will save hundreds of dollars on dry cleaning alone.
