Wool Pants For Work And Play

Wool Pants For Work And Play

Wool is a really versatile fabric that's fantastic in many uses. Coarse wool makes great rugs and floor covers.

Wool blankets are wonderful as throws and, naturally, wool is amazing for making warm, sturdy clothing.

Wool clothing keeps in heat very well. It can be woven into sweaters that look comfy and snug, excellent for a cold winter's day.

It's also superb for outerwear, making coats and jackets that accomplish the job of keeping you warm and last for a few years. There are several different uses for wool in clothing. Plenty of the nicest styles of suits and slacks are made from wool. It looks acceptable and has many qualities which make it good for regular wearing. A typical use for wool is in wool pants. Wool dress slacks appear smart and maintain their shape well. Wool is anti-static and so it doesn't attract mud, and the fibers also repel dust. This means you can wear them frequently without a need to wash too often, and also without the pants stretching in the wrong places with multiple wearings. Another vital use for wool pants is in out of doors wear. Hunting and other outdoor sporting clothing is sometimes made from wool to keep in heat and thanks to the way it interacts with water. Wool soaks up water without feeling heavy like cotton and it may also keep you warm, even if wet. There's also an antibacterial property that wool has. This makes it perfect for clothing that'll be worn for an extended period or while sweating. This is the reason why merino wool is a top choice for athletic wear ; it is extremely soft, but also has all of these qualities of other sorts of wool. Often you've got to stress about pressing your dress slacks. This is a pain, and you regularly will pay to have it done at the dry cleaners. Wool pants, from the other viewpoint, are terribly proof against wrinkling. This makes them much simpler to look after in many ways. Some of the people avoid wool because they do not want to dry clean their clothing. Not all wool must be dry cleaned. Some can be hand washed or maybe machine washed in cold water. Check the labels and you'll find that not all wool needs such fragile care. Wool pants are a top choice, not only in casual wear, but in more formal clothes and even in craggy outside use. It is a flexible material that comes in various levels of softness suited to differing kinds of use.

When you are looking for a pair of pants that has got a natural feel and look and will keep you warm, but permit your skin to respire, wool pants are definitely the way to go.

Help with winter clothing-going to china in December?

I'll be going to Chongqing, Xi'an and Chengdu (and maybe Hong Kong) from 6 to 26 December. I've never been to cold countries before, so I really don't know what to pack. It may get down to -3deg C in Xi'an.

Is thermal underwear a must? If so then is wool a must, or will cotton do too? The shopkeeper said that cotton won't do for temperatures below 5deg C. I also don't know how many sets to get. How long can they be worn before washing? (I don't know how they are going to dry in the freezing weather) Are they worn all the time, or only when I'm outdoors?

Will I need a hat? I just bought a pair of gloves for 23 bucks, not sure if it'd be enough though... And as for the jacket, will the polyester jacket do, or will I need the very expensive one with bird feathers and stuff?

Have so many questions... Will be very grateful for any help!!!

P.S. I'm pretty afraid of cold... Feel cold in lecture theaters even with a jacket icon razz Help with winter clothing going to china in December?

It's sure to be very cold
The good news is you can buy great cold weather
clothes when you arrive.
Happy Travels

I'm going to be living in Paris from August to December, so I will be experiencing the warm and cold weather.

Any suggestions on what to wear during the winter time when it's cold out? I live in Southern California so I don't have very many "winter clothes".

I have a nice wool coat, but what to wear underneath it to stay warm? Should I really wear "long underwear"? Scarves, etc?

Also, keep in mind I want to look nice - like a Frenchman would dress. I do not want to look like the typical American tourist.

Thanks for any help!

No flip flops. Frenchmen wear good fitting shirts and pants and a leather jacket or sport coat. They tend to not wear jeans and sport coat (but can wear jeans with shirt and leather jacket). Burberry scarves are also popular. They also tend to not wear running shoes unless they are jogging. Not many winter clothes??No problem esp. if you are a student. You will notice that many French students (M and F) have only one pullover which they wear daily during the winter. This is completely acceptable. French ppl also have a tendency to be slim. Other hint, they carry briefcases (even the students) rather than backpacks. Some of them will wear strange looking sweatshirts that say "California Dodgers" or "Green Bay Packers"( with a picture of a BASEBALL player!).

French clothes do look different from US clothes so you might want to buy French clothes in France. But the clothes do tend to be more expensive. See if you can get a refund of the VAT (TVA in French)-- value added tax. Ask at the store and save your receipts. Don't wear a beret unless you want to look like a farmer or war veteran at Armistice Day ceremonies.

Case History
The victim was located September 8, 2004, by bow hunters in a remote area north of Glenwood Springs. The site is in the drainage of No Name Creek at about 9,700 feet elevation, about 6 miles as the crow flies from Glenwood Springs, but 12 miles by the Transfer Trail out of town.
The skeleton revealed no cause of death and the sheriff's office has been assuming it probably was natural.
The man was found in a tent at a campsite in a wooded, remote location. His trousers had rotted away, but the date of currency found at his campsite indicates he apparently had been there no longer than five years.
The letter leaves open the possibility the man was suicidal, although there is no reason to believe he killed himself. Perhaps he was terminally ill and chose to take his life. The man also could have succumbed to unexpected illness or injury while on an outing in the Flat Tops.
Much about the case is conjecture, including a theory that the man entered the Flat Tops Wilderness at a trailhead on the north and hiked four or five days across elevations of 11,000 feet before setting up his tent on a southern drainage at about 9,700 feet. That theory is supported by two moisture-proof National Geographic trail maps of the Flat Tops with a route drawn across them to the area where the remains were discovered. But it's possible the man picked up the maps someone else had marked and left behind.

My psychic skills are undeveloped, but sometimes I get strong feelings about certain information.

I believe his first name is John or George, and his last name starts with Mac or Mc.
He was not suicidal, but he was terminally ill, and believed that no-one could help him. He was poor in the end, after spending his lifetime's financial establishment on looking for a cure. His condition did not affect his ability to walk, carry a heavy load, survive in very cold weather or remain sane when alone for long periods. He came out to hike alone to establish peace with God, and pray that the research he financed will help his children out of this hereditary condition. His condition was physical, but it affected him neurologically, leading to mild psychosis including paranoia, boredom and hypersensitivity to light and sound. His immunological and circulatory system was sound till his last days, but there was something bad in the food he was consuming.
In his last days he became complacent, forgetting to eat and drink, and due to the loss of fat and muscle on his body, painlessly died of hypothermia in his sleep.

I hope this helps. It may not be accurate; it's just a feeling I get from reading the above report.

How can I stay warm?? I need help!?

I'm miserable! I get so cold in the winter. I know this question has obvious answers, like layering up and wearing silk, wool, fleece -- but it doesn't work! I'm ALWAYS cold! Even when people around me are hot, I'm freezing. How can I at least lessen this? Any "secret" or lesser known tips? I live in New Hampshire, it gets wicked cold. I generally wear 2 pairs of socks (one cotton, then wool over) and about 5 layers of shirts (under, cotton, turtleneck, wool, fleece - then the outerwear/jacket!) and I live in long underwear.
My boots are insulated, I wear silk underliners then thermal gloves (love mittens, but can't wear them cause I need finger usage!) Hat always, scarf when I can find it.
What am I missing?!

I'm pretty sure I can't add any clothes. Is there like... a supplement that can warm me up? Not alcohol, but I guess kind of the same warming effect?

Seriously... I'm like the ice queen. HELP!!

I get so cold that it hurts. And I always have goosebumps!
I have a space heater- right now it says its 76. I'm still cold!

You might have poor circulation, in which case you could talk to a doctor and see if she can help. Possibility of low blood pressure causing the poor circulation as well. Make sure your clothes aren't too tight and constricting you, as your body needs some space to create a warm air pocket. Hope something works!

I'm going to Wisconsin for a 1 week program in Feb. at Teton Science School (I’m going cross-country skiing)
Based on an e-mail I got (I'm simplifying it), I need to get the following (tops & bottoms for all layers):

**BASE LAYER: Long underwear. This is usually some kind of polyester or polyester-Lycra blend with a fancy proprietary name (REI=MTS, Patagonia=Capilene, etc.)

**INSULATION LAYER: It can be one or more layers of fleece, wool sweater, down or other jacket, etc. Doesn’t need to be windproof/waterproof.

**OUTER LAYER: Rain jackets/pants and/or ski bibs/ jackets/pants work as long as they are windproof & reasonably waterproof. Breathable, waterproof fabrics like Gore-Tex, Elements, etc., are suggested.

**OTHER: A good hat (insulated) that covers your ears preferably with some kind of a windblock liner; waterproof mittens (warmer than gloves); snow boots (insulated); & socks that are wool or wool/polypropylene blend.
(I'm 16 and I wear women's small--I need links to places that carry stuff in my size. Also, I know it’s not really important, but the nicer they look the better, so the more links you can give the better.)

http://www.peterglenn.com/ is having an awesome mid-season sale. icon wink What website(s) can I find this kind of snow weather clothing on? They have stuff for most every size from tons and tons of different companies. I'd suggest Spyder or Columbia for a ski jacket, and marker for ski pants ( I LOVE my marker ski pants!).

BUT, before buying anything, be sure to try it on at a store and see if it fits properly. You say small, but your small may be a medium in one company and a child's extra large in another, so be sure to test everything first, before buying something too big or too small - always a good thing to do when you are looking to buy anything online. icon smile What website(s) can I find this kind of snow weather clothing on?

Remember, you always want clothing that can be easily removed and stored, in case it gets really warm wearing all those layers. So dont go for the pull overs, IMO. Go for stuff that is easily zipped on and off and NO suspender like pants - those are a hassle if you have to use the facilities!

For your insulation layer, you can probably just wear stuff you have in your closet: zip up sweatshirt, sweatpants.

For the base layer, you can wear spandex or something similar, so that it keeps your body warmth insulated. Hot Chilly's makes really really good long underwear that doubles up as clothing for going to the gym. http://www.hotchillys.com/
A hot chilly's lady's small is equal to a size 4 or 6. I wear the size small pants and I wear a size 6 jean, but I buy mine small, since I wear my jeans baggy. icon smile What website(s) can I find this kind of snow weather clothing on?

For the "other" layer, you can just use any hat that throughly covers your head and keeps it warm - even a hat that grandma knitted you works fine! Waterproof gloves are MUST, however. Mittens are going out of style this season, so they may be harder to find. icon smile What website(s) can I find this kind of snow weather clothing on?

Merino Wool Long Underwear

wool underwear Merino Wool Long UnderwearWhen the weather turns cold one of the things everybody thinks about is the best way to stay warm while going about your business. Out come the sweaters and coats ; it is time to dress in layers! This may be exasperating and it can be tough to get the correct quantity of coverage, occasionally you are wearing too much and are hot while inside and often you just feel cold. Finding an excellent pair of long underclothes is vital to solve that issue. Some artificial undies and even cotton and manmade blends aren't breathable enough. Sure they supply heat, but you also find yourself sweating. You may just be able to smell yourself shortly after getting dressed in the morning.

A better option is the nature merino wool long undies. Woollen undies may not sound all that comfortable, but merino wool long undies is essentially comfortable.

Unlike other sorts of wool that could have you scratching your way thru the day, merino wool is really soft, while also being warm. Besides being soft and warm, merino wool is also terribly breathable, permitting your body to control its temperature superbly. Unlike other sorts of underclothes, it has the antibacterial properties of wool, which make it excellent for keeping your sweat from smelling strongly. Merino long underwear is a good choice for any person living in a cold climate.

Instead of layering your clothing so that you can remove layers as required, just this layer under your clothing will keep you warm, although not too hot. In sporting, a merino wool base layer is wonderful for keeping in heat while you take part in activities like skiing, hiking, biking and running. Again, it is excellent for if you'll be sweating, but there are plenty of other reasons it's such an excellent choice. A merino wool base layer provides you with the best material you may have against your skin in a cold environment. It keeps in heat and while it soaks up water, it keeps its heat thoughout helping you to remain warm and avoid hypothermia in winter sports. Merino wool is good as a natural and non-bulky way to keep yourself warm, whether or not you are just going off to a day at work or are arranging a week long hiking trek in winter. It is replaceable and better for the environment, and just like with many natural products, it is a more sensible choice for you personally.

Merino base layers and long undies can be discovered in variable thicknesses so that you can select precisely how much warmth you need. For a winter camping expedition or hike up to a snowy top you can decide for something thicker, and save the thinner ones for wearing on a regular basis or when the weather isn't so cold. Merino wool is the ideal demonstration showing how wool doesn't need to be itchy and uncomfortable. It is soft and warm and extremely flexible.

What clothes should I wear in NY for the winter?

Hello! I'm going to live in New York for a month for school. It will be in January. However, I'm from the south where it hardly ever gets below freezing. Needless to say, I don't have "winter clothes." What should I wear for the cold weather? Are there special shoes that I need to wear to protect my feet from getting wet from the snow? Do I need long underwear? Should I buy a wool coat? Scarf? Gloves? Anything else?

Sorry if these questions sound stupid but I've never lived up north and sub-zero temperatures are completely foreign to me. Thanks so much! icon smile What clothes should I wear in NY for the winter?

You are going to want layers that you can get off with one hand while the other is carrying a bag, holding on to the subway rail, or hailing a cab. Snow removal happens fairly and efficiently in Manhattan, but if you live in the outer boroughs you will want waterproof snowboots. You are better off buying these in NYC - stores tend to sell what people need there. Uniqlo in Soho has reasonably priced coats that appeal to a younger crowd. You can find scarves, gloves and hats from on street vendors for pretty cheap, and they will be what people in NYC are doing if that floats your boat. I think if you wear long underwear you will absolutely roast on the subways and in stores, where the heat is in the high 70's at least. New York apartments can be 100 degrees inside when it is 20 outside. You are probably very excited about this trip and dying to go shopping, but I have traveled and lived on 3 different continents, and I can tell you that you will want to shop when you get there anyway, and you probably want to blend in a bit, so you'll be happier bringing less stuff with you and packing an empty suitcase to bring back home!

2 What to pack in your suitcase for the High Times Cannabis Cup in AmsterdamWhat you need to pack in your suitcase for the High Times Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam - A Cannabis Column by Jet Baker

So you're going to the High Times Cannabis Cup. That's frickin awesome! You've watched videos about it; you've heard about it from friends or from friends of friends who've been and you've read about it in High Times Magazine for years. Now you're going to be a Cannabis Cup Judge.

This year will be my 10th Cup. Each Cup is different because of the people attending. It's the people that make the magic happen. (Well, and of course the best weeds in the world right!) This year you are a part of the production. You will be part of the magic. You've cast yourself as an Official High Times Cannabis Cup Judge.

Im writing a series of Cannabis Columns to help prepare you for your journey so you'll be prepared to have the best possible experience. Your adventure starts at home. What you pack in your suitcase can make a big difference in your experience in Amsterdam. Here's what you should pack in your suitcase.

Cash.

OK, you obviously don't pack cash in your suitcase but you will need more cash than you think. I met a couple of dudes from Florida last year who spent most of their money in the first 2 days of the trip. A couple days in the coffee shops and nights in the red light district left these guys near penniless for the rest of the week.

Bring more money than you think you need.

The way to get the best exchange rate is to use your bank card in an ATM machine to get Euros. Currency exchanges will charge you a fee.

Credit cards are not accepted in as many places as in the states so you'll be paying Euros for most things you need. Coffee Shops don't take credit cards. American Express and Discover are accepted in few places. MasterCard and Visa are more widely accepted. Hotels often add an extra fee if you choose to pay for your stay with a credit card.

And I can't say this loud enough - YOU WILL NEED MORE MONEY THAN YOU THINK.

It's true.

OK. Here's what needs to be in your suitcase -

Shoes.

Believe it or not each year some people arrive at Schiphol airport in Amsterdam in flip flops and sandals. I've seen it happen. The beautiful Sara Newton, Miss High Times '07 arrived in sandals. Her first mission in the Dam was to buy some boots. Bless her heart. Bring more than 1 pair of shoes in case one gets wet. Water proof footwear will insure you dry warm feet. If you have wool socks bring em.

And bring warm clothes!

It can be around 80 degrees in November where I live but Amsterdam will be cold and possibly rainy. The dudes I met from Florida last year only had Kottonmouth King hoodies to keep 'em. I mean they were freezing. You will be spending a lot of time outdoors, most of your day. So even it you're extremely lucky and it's 50 degrees every day that's like spending your day in a refrigerator. Ya get cold.

Temps can range from 10 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Bring a warm winter waterproof jacket. You should also bring some high tech underwear, long johns. You'll be glad you did. Wear long sleeve layers.

And dont forget a warm hat and gloves too.

Bottom line - bring warm and waterproof clothing. They'll help keep you warm and dry and healthy for your Cannabis Cup adventure.

Oh and those dudes form Florida, yeah they were broke and they were freezing their butts off but you know what? They still had a trip of a lifetime.

Hi! There are certain items I need for a 2 week long hike.
On the packing list that I was given it said that I needed a set of long underwear (tops and bottoms: wool or synthetic) and no cotton

I have no idea what that means, what it looks like, or where to get such a thing. It would be extremely helpful if someone could describe it and find a picture of it so that I could see what it is exactly and tell me where I can get such an item. Thanks!

On more thing that I have a question on is: what exactly are heavy socks (wool/synthetic)?

I got a bag of synthetic crew cut socks, is that appropriate?

Thanks very much! I am grateful for any help at all.
icon biggrin Hiking and Packing for it (needs to clear up what I need to pack)?

they prob mean thermal wear.
Its used to provide an insulating layer in addition to a sweater or jacket Just go to walmart in the underwear section and look for thermals.
